Blown to Bits: Chapter 3

1. What is metadata? Give an example.
Metadata is a set of data that describes and gives information about other data. An
example of metadata is the Exchangeable Image File Format, where it stores the
camera settings.
2. What is a model?
A model is a representation of a photograph in bits.
3. What's the difference between a raster image and an ASCII representation
of a text document?
Raster image is an image based on pixels and an ASCII is an 8-bit code used to
represent a string of symbols
4. What are filename extensions? What are they used for?
Filename extensions are the three letters after the dot at the end of a file name to
indicate how the contents are to be interpreted.
5. What is lossless representation? What is lossy representation? What are
the trade-offs in using each representation?
Lossless representation is one that allows exactly the same image to be rendered.
A lossy representation is the approximation to the same image to be rendered.
Lossless is good in the way that it is the exact image but in the cost of larger file.
Lossy requires less data in the trade off of being less accurate.
6. What is stenography and what is it used for?
Stenography is the art of sending secret messages in imperceptible ways.
Stenography is used to send secret messages and make the message
unreadable to everyone except the person you are sending it to.
7. What would you have to do to delete a document from your computer
so that it could not possibly be read by anyone else?
I would delete it and empty the recycling bin.

Free Response:
8. How has retouching become a controversial issue? Give an example.
Retouching is a controversial issue because of how models are photoshopped.
This creates an unhealthy image of how people are suppose to be. For example,
women models are photoshopped to be thinner, which bad for people because
they will look at those thin models to be the ideal body type.
9. Would you rather own a camera (or camera phone) with a higher number
of megapixels or lower? Explain.
I would rather own a camera with more megapixels because the image taken by
the camera will be more clear. Higher megapixels, the more clean the image will be.
10. Other than digital images, what might be an example of a computer model?
Explain your answer based on the definition of a model.
An example of a computer model is video. Video is just a bunch of images played
fast enough to create motion.
